Job Summary:

DDC is seeking a z/OS Sysplex Performance Tuning/Capacity Planning Specialist who is  responsible for ensuring adequate resources are available for mission critical workloads. The z/OS Sysplex Performance Tuning/Capacity Planning Specialist monitors utilization of resources and predicts future resources requirements. In addition, the z/OS Sysplex Performance Tuning/Capacity Planning Specialist resolves performance issues associated with mission critical workloads.

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Estimating and recommending resource needs for supporting OPM planned software/hardware upgrades.
  • Verifying the correct operation of the z/OS operating system and subsystems.
  • Validating the correct performance of features supporting the Data Center’s Parallel Sysplex.
  • Analyzing the Sysplex configuration for proper performance by studying appropriate RMF reports.
  • Detecting system bottlenecks caused by resource contention and taking corrective actions to alleviate constraint issues following OPM’s Change Control process. Resources include CP, zIIP, IFL, main storage, Coupling Facilities, Coupling Facility links, switches, channels, controllers, DASD I/O rate, tape I/O rate, printers, and the OSA.
  • Evaluating transaction response times provided by the Data Center to various user groups against SLAs.
  • Identifying delayed workloads and reasons for the delay.
  • Identifying performance problems, evaluating cost-effective changes, predicting the effect of those changes, and implementing them.
  • Defining and adjusting WLM performance goals of workloads based on business needs.
  • Analyzing I/O configuration and subsystems considering the performance implications of the interactions of the components.
  • Defining and implementing WLM service definitions based on SLA and following OPM’s Change Control process.
  • Customizing RMF facilities to monitor workload performance and resource utilization.
  • Customizing Allen Systems Group’s TMON suite of products to monitor system health and workload productivity.
  • Producing monthly reports for the Data Center’s Sub-Capacity Workload Charging using IBM SCRT (Sub-capacity Report Tool) for billing and identifying areas for tuning to reduce overall cost of operation.
  • Analyzing the z/OS UNIX environment and taking tuning steps to ensure service level agreements are met.
  • Analyzing WLM and making adjustments in WLM service policy following OPM’s Change Control process to ensure service level agreements are met.
  • Using RMF III Interactive Performance Analysis to isolate and fix system degradation problems.
  • Using MXG software to produce monthly and ad hoc performance reports.
  • Planning and configuring WLM service classes for Data Center workloads.
  • Planning and configuring WLM classification rules for Data Center workloads.
  • Planning, analyzing, and configuring PARMLIB members for system performance improvement.
  • Planning, analyzing, and configuring zFS to improve file system performance.
  • Planning, analyzing, and generating reports from various SMF records as required.
  • Analyzing CICS, WebSphere, IIB, MQ, and other online subsystems transactions to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met.

Job Requirements (Education/Skills/Experience):

  • Eight years of demonstrated experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer.
  • Six years of experience must be with z/OS V1.9 or above.
  • Five years of recent experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer providing expertise in Tivoli System Automation for z/OS V3.3 or above.
  • Two years of recent demonstrated experience implementing IBM zSeries Enterprise Server technologies similar in scope to the one described in this solicitation.
  • Recent demonstrated experience installing, customizing, and implementing Tivoli System Automation for z/OS and IBM Workload Scheduler.
  • Demonstrated experience performing problem determination and resolution under Tivoli System Automation for z/OS and IBM Workload Scheduler.
  • Demonstrated experience coding IBM’s NetView automation tables.
  • Demonstrated experience specifying IBM’s NetView initialization statements.
  • Demonstrated experience in message suppression and automation of messages under z/OS.
  • Demonstrated experience of basic z/OS system console operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in customizing System Automation Status Display Facility.
  • Demonstrated experience in automating multi-image z/OS environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in automating systems for unattended operations.
