Job Summary:

The UNIX Administrator is responsible for designing, configuring, implementing, and maintaining secure and reliable UNIX-based systems within the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) enterprise. Operating in both NIPRNet and SIPRNet environments, this role ensures the availability and integrity of systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), HP-UX, and Solaris. The administrator plays a critical role in lifecycle support for DLA’s Technology Foundation Services, contributing to cybersecurity compliance, disaster recovery planning, and efficient operations in mission-critical environments.

 

The UNIX Administrator collaborates with government stakeholders, cybersecurity personnel, and fellow system administrators to ensure compliance with DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), Assured Compliance Assessment Solution (ACAS) requirements, and enterprise IT governance.

 

*This position is contingent upon contract award and is anticipated to start July 2025* 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform installation, configuration, and administration of UNIX/Linux systems including RHEL 7+, Solaris 11+, and HP-UX 11.31+.
  • Monitor and optimize system performance; investigate alerts and resolve operational issues proactively.
  • Apply patches, perform system upgrades, and manage configuration changes in accordance with DoD cybersecurity requirements.
  • Conduct system audits, review logs for anomalies, and ensure effective implementation of intrusion detection measures.
  • Implement high-availability configurations, system clustering, and virtualization strategies.
  • Manage privileged access and system accounts via Red Hat Identity Manager (IDM).
  • Install and maintain COTS security and monitoring tools such as Trellix, Splunk, HBSS, and ArcSight.
  • Assist with disaster recovery and Continuity of Operations (COOP) initiatives including planning and execution support.
  • Support technical design activities and perform feasibility studies for new or upgraded UNIX platforms.
  • Provide tier-2/3 level support and collaborate with on-site and remote teams to resolve escalated incidents.
  • Participate in UNIX system hardening, compliance scanning, and remediation of vulnerabilities.
  • Document system configurations, standard operating procedures, and changes for audit readiness.
  • Deliver customer service and IT support aligned with DLA service levels, including CRM records, MOUs, and SLAs.
  • Coordinate with J6 personnel and provide incident tracking updates in line with ticketing metric standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements (Education/Skills/Experience):

  • Clearance: Must possess an active DoD Secret clearance
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology) or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 7 years of systems administration experience on UNIX operating systems (RHEL, Solaris, HP-UX).
    • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in UNIX server troubleshooting, tuning, patching, and configuration management.
    • Minimum 5 years of experience with UNIX server clustering, load balancing, and virtualization technologies.
  • Certifications: RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator) or CompTIA Linux+, issued by a nationally recognized technical authority.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Expertise in operating system security, backup solutions, and shell scripting.
    • Experience with enterprise tools for performance monitoring and compliance scanning.
    • Familiarity with IA controls, STIG implementation, and RMF/DIACAP accreditation processes.
