Job Summary:

Seeking a highly experienced IBM Z Systems Engineer to support the modernization of the Defense Information Systems Agency's mainframe environments through a mainframe hybrid cloud prototype. This role will perform the implementation of z/OS, Linux on Z, and container-based systems within a modernized on-premises infrastructure that integrates with centralized control planes, automation platforms, and multi-cloud resources. The engineer will ensure operational continuity, performance parity, and security compliance during system setup, software integration, and workload migration.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Mainframe Setup & Configuration
  • Install and tune the z/OS operating system on cloud-hosted or on-premises IBM Z hardware.
  • Configure logical partitions (LPARs), I/O subsystems, and network connectivity.
  • Define mainframe hardware profiles and allocate resources (CPU, memory, channels).
  • Validate system performance benchmarks and readiness for production workloads.
Software Component Implementation
  • Deploy and configure core software for z/OS, z/Linux, and containerized platforms.
  • Integrate essential components: monitoring, security, ESM tools, and automation pipelines (e.g., Ansible, STIG enforcement).
  • Ensure software configurations meet functionality, performance, and security compliance requirements as defined by the government.
System Software Migration
  • Migrate and optimize existing mainframe system software, middleware (e.g., transaction managers, databases), and supporting services to the new hybrid environment.
  • Replicate key performance configurations from legacy systems to achieve parity or improvement.
Control Plane Integration
  • Configure and integrate the centralized control plane to support:
    • User authentication and RBAC
    • Resource provisioning
    • Monitoring and alerting
    • Utility-based billing dashboards
  • Ensure project performance goals through robust testing and validation.
  • Align implementation with DISA’s Statement of Need (SoN) and assist in accreditation processes.
Validation & Performance Tuning
  • Conduct system validation, tuning, and benchmarking during initial deployment.
  • Monitor system behavior under application load and adjust parameters for throughput and reliability.
  • Leverage automation to detect and resolve performance anomalies.
Migration Strategy & Execution
  • Support the automated provisioning and deployment of multiple z/OS and z/Linux instances
  • Create and execute workload migration plans, including:
    • Application-specific configuration mapping
    • Pre-migration testing and post-migration assessments
  • Support disaster recovery planning and backup integration.
Architecture Support
    • Provide engineering input to support system design validation, control plane extensibility, and emerging capability integration.
    • Recommend infrastructure modifications and ensure implemented systems adhere to DoD hybrid cloud architecture standards.

Job Requirements (Education/Skills/Experience):

  • 8+ years of experience in mainframe systems engineering with expertise in:
    • z/OS installation, JES2/JES3, VTAM/TCP-IP
    • LPAR and IOCP/HCD configuration
    • Storage and network management (e.g., DFSMS, OSA adapters)
  • Proven track record of system software migration, sysplex configuration, and performance tuning.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure and Configuration as Code, STIG compliance, and hybrid/cloud-integrated control planes.
  • Understanding of DevSecOps pipelines and application modernization in z/OS or z/Linux.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • IBM certifications in System Z, z/OS Administration, or related domains.
  • Scripting proficiency in CLIST or REXX, JCL automation, or experience with z/OSMF.
  • Experience with enterprise tools: ServiceNow, Splunk, Tivoli, etc.
  • Familiarity with multi-tenant architectures, cloud-integrated IBM Z partitions, and automation frameworks.
