Job Summary:

We are seeking a UNIX Administrator to provide senior-level administration, engineering, and sustainment support for UNIX and Linux operating system environments within the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Critical Cloud and Infrastructure Support (CCIS) program. The UNIX Administrator will be responsible for installing, configuring, monitoring, and securing enterprise UNIX/Linux systems to ensure high availability, performance, and compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) cybersecurity requirements.

 

The ideal candidate will possess extensive hands-on experience with UNIX/Linux system administration in large-scale enterprise and DoD environments, including automation, disaster recovery, and performance optimization across on-premise, virtual, and cloud-integrated platforms.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, administer, and maintain UNIX/Linux operating systems including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), AIX, Solaris, or HP-UX.
  • Perform system monitoring, performance tuning, patching, and troubleshooting to ensure system stability and availability.
  • Design, implement, and maintain high availability, clustering, and load balancing solutions for UNIX/Linux systems.
  • Develop and enforce security hardening configurations in accordance with DISA STIGs, RMF, and DoD cybersecurity policies.
  • Plan and execute system upgrades, migrations, and data transfers across UNIX/Linux environments.
  • Implement and test backup, replication, and disaster recovery solutions to support continuity of operations.
  • Automate system administration tasks using scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or HCL and tools such as Ansible or Puppet.
  • Collaborate with network, database, virtualization, and cybersecurity teams to ensure integrated system operations.
  • Maintain detailed system documentation including build guides, architecture diagrams, and operational procedures.
  • Provide tier III technical support and mentor junior administrators in UNIX/Linux best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements (Education/Skills/Experience):

  • Clearance: Must possess an active Secret clearance and be eligible for IT-I (Tier 5/SSBI) / Critical Sensitive access. U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Certifications: 
  • DoD 8570.01-M IAT Level II baseline certification (e.g., Security+, CASP+, or CISSP).
  • One of the following Google Cloud Platform certifications: Associate Cloud Engineer or Professional Cloud Architect.
  • Current Microsoft certification under the “Server Admin UNIX/Linux Operating System” role listed on the DLA Approved Cybersecurity (CS) Computing Environment (CE) List.
  • Additional certifications such as Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), or CompTIA Linux+ are preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Seven (7) years of progressive systems administration experience on UNIX/Linux operating systems (AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, or RHEL).
  • Five (5) years of experience supporting disaster recovery, data replication, and high availability environments.
  • Five (5) years of hands-on experience troubleshooting, tuning, and patching UNIX/Linux systems.
  • Experience administering clustered, load-balanced, and virtualized UNIX/Linux server environments.
  • Knowledge of hybrid and cloud-integrated UNIX/Linux environments leveraging AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI.
  • Strong understanding of DoD cybersecurity requirements including RMF, DISA STIGs, and audit readiness.
  • Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of progressive experience administering enterprise UNIX/Linux operating systems, including demonstrated expertise supporting high-availability and mission-critical systems in DoD or Federal environments.

Desired Experience and Skillset:

  • Five (5) years of hands-on experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) IT hosting solutions.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8 or newer.
  • Experience supporting commercial cloud provider hosting solutions including Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure, and OCI.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, and HashiCorp Configuration Language (HCL).
  • Experience implementing and sustaining automation capabilities using Ansible, Puppet, or similar tools.
  • Expertise diagnosing and resolving complex performance issues related to CPU, memory, disk I/O, and networking.
  • Strong understanding of network fundamentals including VPNs, firewalls, and remote access configurations.
  • Experience designing and architecting enterprise solutions across both UNIX/Linux and Windows environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in high-pressure environments and manage critical incidents professionally.
